You are graciously invited to discover Boulogne-Billancourt, on a stroll with an inhabitant, at the gates of the capital, the largest city of Ile-de-France region after Paris. A city rich in cultural treasures, such as the famous Albert Kahn museum and its gardens, the museum that houses works from the 30’s; houses or buildings designed by the great architects of that time: Le Corbusier, Mallet Stevens, Perret, Fisher; a city with many different gardens; a city that is more than six centuries old, whose traces can still tell the life of yesterday.

We are southwest of Paris in the Ile de France. The commune of Boulogne-Billancourt is glued to the 16th arrondissement of Paris.

Why do our Greeters invite you to Boulogne? Watch the video
Who are we?
We are volunteers from Boulonnais, members of the International Association of Greeters. We wish to make discover “our Boulogne” to visitors, as we would do for friends. We are neither guide-interpreters nor qualified lecturers, but curious inhabitants, passionate about the richness of our city, who speak several languages, and who want to meet and welcome foreign people in Boulogne or in France. During the walk, the “greeter” will walk with you in the streets of a neighborhood he loves for the richness of its past or for its architecture, its markets, its cafés, its craftsmen or its artists…

Each of the “Greeter de France” destinations is led and managed by a local actor: Association, collective of residents or tourist entity (Tourist Offices, Departmental Tourism Committee). ON THE TRACES OF ALBERTO SANTOS DUMONT AND MARIE MARVINGT
One has been retained by history, the other is almost ignored. And yet both flew over the sky of the Parc des Coteaux de Saint Cloud in the early 20th century. Born almost the same year (1875), they will all have 2, child, driven a locomotive and by 1900 a car, had the same size, flew in a spherical balloon, escaped certain death, will be famous and known in the 1910s, will be elevated to the rank of officers of the Legion of Honor. But for one the story will stop at the beginning of the Great War while for the other, it will be an opportunity for an additional celebrity. And yet the great History will remember Santos-Dumont and his feat of 1901 and ignore Marie Marvingt and her sporting prowess. Why did she hold the life of a man to that of a woman, that of the “flying Brazilian” to that of the “Fiancée of Danger”? THE FLOWERY HILLSIDES OF SAINT CLOUD
A greeter will tell you the story of the district separated into four distinct parts with different destinies: that of the bourgeoisie who admires the views and perspectives on the Bois de Boulogne and Paris, that of the working-class population who live on the banks of the Seine, that founder of the Dassault aeronautics and that of the resort subdivision.

PARC AND CHÂTEAU DE ROTHSCHILD
Come and discover, in the company of a passionate of the place, the history of the former great property of the Rothschilds in Boulogne, its park and the surroundings of the castle, elements disappeared to those still in place, witnesses of a residence that made the admiration of the good society of the time

COLLINE DE MEUDON, LES 3 CHÂTEAUX
Meudon developed around three castles. We will take “La grande perspective” of Le Notre to reach the large terrace: the Old Castle was destroyed but the view on Paris is very beautiful. We will see the Orangery of the 17th century and the remaining part of Château Neuf that the Grand Dauphin had built by Mansart; it is home to the Observatory. A beautiful 16th century house that was inhabited among others by Ambrose Paré, surgeon of the king, Armande Béjart, after the death of Molière, now a museum of art and history, is on our way. Parisians built large country houses in the 19th century, in the middle of which circulate pleasant and fragrant scents.

ON THE EDGE OF THE BOULOGNE WOODS
To the west of the centre of Paris, near the Bois de Boulogne, the Jardins des Serres d’Auteuil, the Roland Garros tennis stadium and the houses of the great architects of the 1930s, an exclusive district at the gate of Paris where RENAULT, founded in Boulogne Billancourt had its factories, and where cinema created its most beautiful works.

THE WOOD LARGE AND SMALL HISTORY
After going through the landscaping of the Auteuil racecourse (made in 2014), we will cross the Bois de Boulogne, its lakes and mysterious groves before discovering the Château de Longchamp which now houses Goodplanet, an exhibition place created in 2017 by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and dedicated entirely to ecology and diversity. This 5 km walk will allow us to learn more about the history of this wood, its forest layouts, its mythical characters and among them Queen Margot, the Nun of Diderot, not to mention Napoleon III or Santos-Dumont.

Surrounded by the Serres d’Auteuil, Rolland Garros, the Parc des Princes, you can discover, according to the inspiration of your Greeter of the day, from the Porte d’Auteuil to the center of Boulogne, the very residential face of the city where many scholars, painters and sculptors were invited at the dawn of the last century for whom the best architects of the time showed all their talent and their sense of novelty This vibrant and colorful neighborhood combines the energy and classicism of Paris with the originality and modernity of Boulogne’s 1930s villas and mansions. A laboratory for the architecture of the 1930s

The Boulogne of the XXIst century
Come and discover the contemporary face of our city which has replaced the working class city, the one that Jean-Paul Sartre did not want to despair in front of the Renault factories. In a totally rethought urbanism, with the realizations of the greatest architectural signatures of our time, Norman Foster, Dominique Perrault, Christian de Portzamparc, Jean-Paul Viguier, our Greeter will not fail to make you appreciate the impressive Horizons tower of Jean Nouvel, the delightful Billancourt park and the very young Seine Musicale, whose fame runs more and more far from its auditorium-sphere.

Saint Cloud sidehills
A Greeter will tell you the history of the hill, separated in four distinct parts, with different destinies: the bourgeois who admires the views and perspectives on the Bois de Boulogne and Paris, the worker on the edge of the Seine, the industrial who participated in the birth of aeronautics and the residential for families in vacation.
Thus you will discover Saint-Cloud by walking along the paths and small streets whose names are so many traces of its history. Through this itinerary, you will visit the districts of Coteaux, Val d’or, Montretout, Magenta and the “old town”, the particular architecture of each one corresponding to the history of the city as it has developed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. You will also be on the edge of the Parc de Saint-Cloud, whose history is closely linked to the memories of the monarchy and the Empire.

The Meudon hill.
